Editorial Reviews

Product Description:
The premise is simple: with five common spices and a few basic ingredients, home cooks can create fifty mouthwatering Indian dishes, as diverse as they are delicious. Cooking teacher Ruta Kahate has chosen easy-to-find spices coriander, cumin, mustard, cayenne pepper, and turmeric to create authentic, accessible Indian dishes everyone will love. Roasted Lamb with Burnt Onions uses just two spices and three steps resulting in a meltingly tender roast. Steamed Cauliflower with a Spicy Tomato Sauce and Curried Mushrooms and Peas share the same three spices, but each tastes completely different. Suggested menus offer inspiration for entire Indian dinners. For quick and easy Indian meals, keep it simple with 5 Spices, 50 Dishes.

Excellent Cookbook by Tabata Thomas
I have always wanted to try cooking Indian food but often found myself overwhelmed by the long list of ingredients alone, but not with this book. It’s a simple book, with 50 wonderful recipes that are easy to make, especially for those who are just learning about spices and Indian cuisine, like me!

I found it wonderful to begin with 5 spices, and though they’re common, I hadn’t personally used them before. The intro explains about Tadka, and made it very easy to understand and follow instructions.

I highly recommend this cook book. It’s a wonderful beginning or addition to anyone who enjoys cooking!

A popular, easy pick by Midwest Book Review
How can gourmet dishes be produced from only five spices? The five featured here are coriander seeds, cumin, mustard seeds, ground cayenne and turmeric: the dishes which evolve are spicy and delicious Indian fare. From Creamed Farmer Greens to Steamed Cauliflower with Spicy Sauce, this simplifies Indian cooking to the degree that any public lending library will find it a popular, easy pick, complete with the color photos needed to make it an eye-appealing pick any library strong in easy ethnic cookbooks will relish.

I checked it out from the library and I don’t want to return it! by C. King
I made a really unassuming looking pea and mushroom curry from this book last weekend, and now I am hooked. I have made several of the recipes now and they have all turned out beautifully. If I cut down on the cayenne, even my baby loves the food from this book. It’s on my Christmas list now.

Easy Recipes and Delicious Results by Steven Muni
I have made several recipes from this book and have been delighted with all so far. I cook a lot of Indian food, and am a fan of the books of Mahadur Jaffrey and Julie Sahni, but this book is going to be used as much as their books. The premise is simple but not simplistic. The recipes are easy to follow and the results are delicious. Particular raves at my house go to the carrot raita, with it’s inclusion of walnut pieces and raisins, (I used dried cranberries.) And the Goan eggplant and shrimp curry is a winner, although I used a little more shrimp and eggplant than called for in the recipe and used a full can of coconut milk instead of the cup of water and cup of coconut milk called for. This is a worthy addition to anyone’s collection of cookbooks.
