Your first pregnancy! The early morning sun shining on that positive line on the home pregnancy test, is one of the most memorable moments in a couple’s life. You guys may have been TTC (Trying to Conceive) for months before this day. Or may be this came as a real surprise. Nevertheless, a little angel is on its way to your lives!

In case you have been TTC for the first time, here are some of the pregnancy symptoms you need to watch out for to know that you and your partner are on the right track

1. Implantation bleeding - This is quite common 8-10 days after your ovulation. It is usually a light spotting which can go on for a day or two. It is different from the usual menstruation and you’ll notice it immediately. However, do not worry if you don’t experience any implantation bleeding- many women never do and it’s quite normal.

2. Cramps in the lower abdomen - This occurs about the same time as implantation bleeding. Mild cramps may radiate towards your thighs too.

3. Basal Body Temperature - If you have been keeping a track of your body temperature regularly, you will notice that the temperature increases by about 0.2-0.4 degrees during ovulation. This temperature drops after the fertile period has passed. If you are pregnant, the temperature continues to be higher than usual.

4. Missed Period - Yes, this is one of the major symptoms of pregnancy. Usually, for most women, this is the first sign of pregnancy. If your cycle has been regular for the past few months and you have been diligently trying to conceive, this is a sure sign. However, wait for a week before you do a home pregnancy test. This will reduce chances of ‘false negatives’.

5. By now you should be in your 6th week of pregnancy - Yes, the first week of pregnancy starts from the first day of your last menstruation! During this time, you will see numerous changes in your body. The main being the areola darkening and breasts becoming tender.

6. You are likely to feel nauseous and dizzy whenever you see food - This is more likely when you see meat products. However, you need not worry about it too much. There are women who pass through the first trimester or pregnancy without even a single iota of problem.

However, always remember that there can be other reasons for these symptoms too. For instance, you may have had a hectic month of maybe house shifting, illness, death in a family, etc. Such incidents “may” affect your monthly cycle explaining why your period is being delayed. Nausea may be due to something you ate recently or simply out of tension! Dizziness may be the result of low sugar or BP levels.

Do a home pregnancy test around 3 weeks after the ovulation date. This becomes all the more important if this your first pregnancy and you and your partner don’t know what to expect. Always keep in mind, the home pregnancy tests may give false negatives but rarely does it give false positives!

Pregnancy in general and first pregnancy in particular is a time of mixed feelings and emotions. This is a time when you need to take special care and precaution about your health and that of your baby. If you witness pregnancy symptoms such as implanting beading or missed period get a pregnancy test done preferably under the supervision of your doctor.
