Where do the good guys go when it is time to retire? I said good guys, mind you; not rich guys. Sometimes they are not the same thing.
Americans tend to retire to gated communities I have noticed, cannot think why. It would not do for me, it would remind me rather of a security conscious boarding school where I spent a particularly unpleasant ten months as a child.
The Brits go for places like Italy and Spain, or the coast of UK where they enjoy being flooded with regular monotony and remarking that the sunsets are spectacular. I could not manage to admire a sunset if I was standing in flood water three inches over my wellies.
Arabs spend their retirement traveling to all the countries that do not have oil reserves and congratulating themselves on their own good fortune, and the Japanese do not actually retire, they just work with increasing intensity until they drop dead.
Australians stay in Australia because they have a fierce national pride which would prevent them from leaving. New Zealanders stay in New Zealand because it is too far and too expensive to get to anywhere else, and the Dutch stay in Holland because it is flatter than any other destination and they hate hills.
The Italians stay in Italy because who could blame them and the Chinese go wherever they can that is not China and where they can sell flip flops. South Africans will live anywhere that has servants and the Germans will go wherever there is lower tax than in Germany. The Canadians know they have got the best of everything so they charge everybody else large amounts of money for retiring to Canada.
The French stay in France because nobody else wants them.
